We wanted our next blog to be welcoming our new dog, Reuben, a sweet 5-year-old Cocker Spaniel that we are adopting. We brought him home yesterday and intended to wait a few days to blog about him. Instead....the three of us find ourselves in deep grief over the loss of Amanda and Blake's first dog, Veyda.
Darling Veyda, we will miss you deeply, until we meet again. (pictures are not in chronological order)
Veyda has been getting in fights with Aleena for many months, but either Michael or both of us (depending on who's home) have been able to break it up pretty quickly so minimal to no damage done. We have been working with Veyda, doing all we could to reform her. Friday night Michael came home and let Veyda out of the kennel and she immediately attacked Aleena. There was nothing Michael could do and I was at work, though he did try several times in several ways. He kept Blake in the house and was forced to stand back until Aleena tried to get under the bench and hide, whimpering, done. Michael hit Veyda over the head a couple times until she finally looked at him and he was able to grab her. He called me and brought the girls to work. Aleena was badly bruised and punctured but otherwise ok. She stayed the night at the clinic on fluids and meds. We decided to put Veyda down that night, for everyone's sake. It was an extremely hard decision but we weren't getting anywhere with her and we couldn't let her keep trying to kill Aleena or perhaps try to kill one of the other dogs. Michael says God put Reuben into our path and our lives at the perfect time to help us heal. He's absolutely wonderful, but obviously can't replace our Veyda, who we grieve every day. Our clinic has been so wonderful and supportive of us and our decision and we are so grateful for our doctors and co-workers.
Part of what makes us sad is that Veyda and Reuben got along so well the one night we had them both. She liked him, she'd roll over for him. She never did that before.
